10,000 Steps Program

Why aim for 10,000 Steps?

Health experts recommend taking a minimum of 10,000 Steps a day to boost your fitness, manage your weight and lower your risk of serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke. However research shows that most people achieve only 3,000 – 5,000 steps a day! The goal is to aim for 10,000 Steps each day... not just the days you feel like it!

About the 10,000 Steps Program
As a direct result of technological advances such as…the car… the remote… the lift… and the escalator we are moving a lot less than we should. The 10,000 Steps program www.10000steps.org.au has been developed to encourage participation in physical activity for health benefits.  It is a free online program that encourages, individuals, workplace and communities to be more active.
The 10,000 Steps program through the use of a pedometer encourages incidental physical activity from the moment you wake up until the time you go to bed. The pedometer acts as an instant reminded of how many steps you’ve done – and how many more you need to take.
10,000 steps is approximately equal to 8 km or a 30 minute walk + routine daily activities.
Remember it’s important to set realistic goals and gradually aim for 10,000 Steps a day. The 10,000 Steps website has great tips & tools on how to do this.

10,000 Steps Vs 30 minutes of physical activity...

As 10,000 steps is approximately equal to 8 km or a 30 minute walk + routine daily activities.  For most people in order to complete 10,000 steps a day it is necessary to complete routine daily activities in addition to a 30 minute walk.  For some people who are generally active this may not be the case while for others with low physical activity requirements especially at workplace may need a longer than 30 minute walk  may be necessary to achieve the recommended 10,000 Steps.

Research has shown that those who aim for 10,000 steps a day are more likely to meet the national physical activity guideline: ‘30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most days’ than those who did not accumulate as many steps.
